Intan Nasi Lemak is one of those hidden gems tucked away inside apartment compounds away from the main road that you usually won’t know about unless you a) reside in that neighbourhood, b) someone who’s been there brought you or in the case of a flogger like me c) a reader tells you about it!
Said reader urged me to give it a try, touting it to be one of the tastiest nasi lemaks around. When Ken of FoodPOI came back to Penang recently I suggested we check out Intan Nasi Lemak since I haven’t had Malay style nasi lemak in a long while, usually patronizing this Nyonya Style Nasi Lemak stall.
Intan Nasi Lemak is your neighbourhood food stall where you can get a quick satisfying meal at reasonable prices. Most of their patrons opt to take away but there are a few tables around if you wish to dine there.
Intan Nasi Lemak offers a variety of dishes for you to choose from – various curries, rendang and vegetables. Note the fried chicken platter – it’s almost gone! But fret not for they do continuously fry up fresh batches of fried chicken through out the night.
Ken topping up on chicken curry for his plate of nasi lemak
Standard pack of Nasi Lemak at RM1.20 includes rice, ikan bilis, egg and sambal.
My nasi lemak for the night – I choose beef rendang to add on to the standard plate. The rice was fluffy, fragrant and light, while the sambal was lovely. Not too spicy with a hint of sweetness. And the beef rendang was definitely a good choice for me! Meat was tender and flavorful. The beef rendang here is not the dry rendang type though and not very spicy. But still good nonetheless.
Ken chose the fried chicken which was huge! His verdict was that it was nice and crisp. Not bad at all! I will definitely go back again to try the fried chicken.
Overall I enjoyed my plate of nasi lemak and would go back again to appease my nasi lemak cravings. Unfortunately I don’t have prices for what we ate cos Ken treated me 🙂 But if I’m not mistaken, for the 3 of us plus drinks (Ken’s friend also chose a curry chicken ‘masak merah’ to go with his nasi lemak), it was about RM20. Do check out this stall the next time you’re in the area.
Intan Nasi Lemak is located at the ground floor of Block KG, Taman Free School flats. This block is facing a small field and is near the Taman Free School Hawker Center or Medan Selera which is next to the round about.
Operation hours: 6pm-2am Sunday-Friday. Closed on Saturdays.

I like nasi lemak with dishes. Last time I used to have the Chinese version at food court opposite of Sunshine, near Relau there.

RM1.20 for nasi lemak? I miss the days before I moved to KL and could still “taste” prices like that. 😛

Wow, I totally remember a post-drinking binge here years ago… I was probably too intoxicated to appreciate it for what it was, but I remember it was VERY spicy!
Have added this place to my makan list already, can’t wait to try out the food 🙂

i was there last sat and it was closed, din notice the photo u’ve taken at ur post, then i went back yday nite for dinner (since i stay nearby). verdict, only the fried chicken is good, the rest, it’s just normal stuff, nothing special. if u wan good nasi lemak, u can try out williams at tmn mayang in pj, (yeah pj, not pg), at least the rice is much more better than intan’s
one thing i like about intan is the amount of cats lingering ur table when u r eating. it’s sight for cat lovers and they way the owner chase the cats away using water pistol, is something interesting

I used to frequent this nasi lemak place some time back but have stopped going as I found its standard has dropped drastically in recent times. It’s not nearly as good as it was say 2 years ago.
